Innovation Award: recognition of our passion

The emblematic Teatro Calderón in Valladolid was the venue chosen for the prestigious Premios del Campo awards ceremony, organized by El Norte de Castilla. In this edition, Yeguada Vergara, represented by our General Manager, Miguel Vergara Blanco, had the honor of receiving the Innovation Award for its revolutionary project of breeding, training, competition and sale of Purebred Spanish Horses (PRE). This recognition highlights our commitment to excellence and innovation within the equestrian sector.

The Innovation 2023 Award from El Norte de Castilla has been awarded to Yeguada Vergara, not only for our advanced breeding and dressage techniques, but also for our ability to manage the entire process, from breeding to the sale of tamed horses. This uniqueness in our operation has been a decisive factor for the jury, which recognized the rarity of finding companies that cover all aspects of equine management with such efficiency and dedication.

Miguel Vergara Blanco, upon receiving the award, remarked: “We do the whole process, from covering the mares through artificial insemination to having animals tamed in the highest category of dressage such as Grand Prix events”. This statement reflects our comprehensive and meticulous approach that has been fundamental to our success.

Our stud, located in the picturesque town of Baños de Ledesma in Salamanca, specializes in horses for the Olympic discipline of dressage. We have established an international focus, exporting our horses to more than 14 countries where these disciplines are highly valued.

One of the most innovative aspects of our project is the use of artificial insemination for the mating of our mares. Each dam is covered with a stallion carefully selected on the basis of different aspects, among which genetic analysis is the most important. This process not only allows us to obtain the desired coat in the foals, but also to ensure other important genetic characteristics that we look for in our animals.

Miguel Vergara explains: “Each dam we cover her with a different stallion depending on what she looks like, but before this covering we do the genetic analysis of the two animals”. This attention to detail and the application of modern genetics is what distinguishes us in the market and ensures the superior quality of our horses.

The sale of our horses is a process that ensures the highest quality and health of the animals. Buyers can visit our facilities or be guided through detailed videos. All of our horses are subjected to rigorous medical examinations before being sold, including 66 x-rays and thorough blood tests to detect any possible diseases. This level of scrutiny ensures that our horses arrive in perfect condition to their new owners.

We have a specialized team that includes veterinarians, riders, grooms and our own laboratory. In addition, we have a high performance center that allows us to train our horses both physically and psychologically. Care includes, among many other things, showering with solarium, ice protectors after each training session, rubber flooring and rationed feed six times a day. This holistic approach ensures that our horses are not only physically fit, but also mentally prepared to compete at the highest level.

A particularly important aspect is the prevention and treatment of piroplasmosis, a tick-borne disease. We invest a great deal of time and significant resources to ensure that our horses are free of this and other diseases, underscoring our commitment to their well-being.

The success of Yeguada Vergara is largely due to our young and dynamic team, with an average age of 30, who bring new ideas and approaches to the equestrian sector. Miguel Vergara concludes: “From a very traditional work we try to come up with innovative things. We are young people, around 30 years old, and we try to make this sector a little more modern in a profitable and striking way”.

This Innovation Award is not only a recognition of our effort and dedication, but also a motivation to continue innovating and improving. We would like to thank again El Norte de Castilla and all the members of the jury for considering our work worthy of this prestigious award. This recognition strengthens us and encourages us to continue betting on innovation in the field, always with the aim of achieving the best for our animals.
